Tragic Loss: ‘Parasite’ Actor Lee Sun-kyun Found Dead in Seoul

South Korea was shocked on Wednesday as news broke of the sudden and tragic death of actor Lee Sun-kyun, renowned for his pivotal role in the Oscar-winning film ‘Parasite.’ 

The country’s emergency office confirmed his passing after he was discovered lifeless in a car at a central Seoul park.

Before his discovery, authorities received information that Lee had left his home after leaving behind a message reminiscent of a suicide note.

Lee Sun-kyun achieved international acclaim for portraying the head of a wealthy family in the critically acclaimed movie ‘Parasite,’ which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2020. 

In 2021, he earned a Screen Actors Guild award for “cast in a motion picture” for his role in the same film. His performance in the sci-fi thriller ‘Dr. Brain’ also earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the International Emmy Awards in the previous year.

Before gaining worldwide recognition with ‘Parasite,’ Lee was a familiar face on Korean screens for decades. He first captured audiences’ attention with his role in the popular drama series ‘Coffee Prince (2007).’ 

His subsequent projects, including the medical drama ‘Behind The White Tower,’ ‘Pasta (2010),’ and ‘My Mister (2018),’ further solidified his status as a versatile and accomplished actor.
