Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Migrants in Southern Mexico

A devastating accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, resulting in the loss of at least ten lives and leaving 25 individuals injured. 

The incident involved a cargo truck clandestinely transporting migrants and unfolding near Guatemala’s border.

Victims Believed to Be Cuban Women, Including a Minor:

According to information from local officials, the victims of this tragic accident are believed to be migrants from Cuba, and all of them were women, including one minor. The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation.

A Dangerous Stretch of Highway:

The accident transpired on a highway along the Pacific coast, specifically between Pijijiapan and Tonala. This region often witnesses the passage of migrants as they embark on perilous journeys in pursuit of reaching the United States.

The cargo truck involved in the accident had a partially wooden body and was destroyed during the incident. The scene was marked by scattered belongings of the migrants, including clothing, bags, and backpacks.

A Second Fatal Accident Within a Week:

This tragic incident marks the second fatal crash involving migrants in less than a week within Chiapas state. On Thursday, two migrants died when another truck overturned in the municipality of Mezcalapa.
