Massive Opposition Rally in Warsaw Ahead of Pivotal Election

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Warsaw on Sunday for an opposition display, just two weeks before a key election that might determine Poland's status in the European Union.

Hundreds of thousands gathered for an opposition rally in Warsaw on Sunday, a mere two weeks before a crucial election that may determine Poland’s standing in the European Union and the strength of its democratic institutions.

The Political Landscape:

Opinion polls indicate that the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) government is poised for a potential victory in the upcoming election.

However, concerns are growing over its ability to secure a majority due to discontent over rising living costs and apprehensions about the erosion of democratic checks and balances.

Record-Breaking Turnout:

Warsaw city authorities reported an unprecedented turnout, with approximately one million attendees, making it the largest rally in the capital’s history.

Contrarily, the state-owned broadcaster TVP, criticized by independent media observers for its alignment with the PiS government, cited police estimates of around 100,000 participants.

Online news channel onet. Pl offered its calculation, suggesting a turnout between 600,000 to 800,000 people.

Participants in the rally displayed banners with slogans like “PiSexit” and “The cat can stay,” referring to the pet cat of PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

Opposition’s Hopes:

The opposition aims to energize voters through this march, increasing their chances in the upcoming election.

PO leader Donald Tusk addressed the crowds, emphasizing the election’s significance for Poland’s rebirth and highlighting concerns about minority and women’s rights.

Tusk, a former European Council president, has suggested that PiS might seek Poland’s exit from the EU, a claim the party denies. The election is pivotal for preserving Poland’s position in the EU.

PiS Campaign Platform:

In power since 2015, PiS has campaigned on anti-immigration policies, citing national security and a commitment to support families and the elderly.

Protesters voiced their aspirations for a democratic Poland and a place within the EU. Many expressed the desire for free courts and participation in the decision-making process.

EU Funding and Judicial Reforms:

PiS has faced criticism from Western nations for undermining democratic norms. Additionally, it has yet to gain access to EU COVID recovery funds due to Brussels’ concerns over Polish court reforms.

A Message from Warsaw’s Mayor:

Warsaw’s mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, a prominent member of the PO, addressed the rally, highlighting the importance of EU funding for job creation and combating climate change and lamenting the impact of democracy-related issues on Poland’s access to these funds.
