Dubai RTA awarded Dh689 million contract for the improvement of Hessa Street

The RTA of Dubai has given a Dh689 million contract to expand and upgrade Hessa Street, a significant thoroughfare connecting many major motorways and suburbs in the city.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a Dh689 million contract to expand and improve Hessa Street, a key artery connecting several major highways and communities in the city.

Doubling Capacity and Enhancing Connectivity:

The project will double the capacity of Hessa Street by increasing the number of lanes from two to four in each direction, accommodating 8,000 vehicles per hour in each direction.

Also, the project includes constructing a 13.5-kilometer cycling track, which will serve as an important transportation and recreational amenity.

Critical Connectivity and Population Growth:

Hessa Street connects Dubai’s three main highways: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road.

It also serves popular residential communities in New Dubai, including Al Barsha, Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Sufouh, and Dubai Sports City.

The project spans 4.5 kilometers from the intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to the intersection with Al Khail Road and includes the revamping of four main intersections along Hessa Street.

Population Impact and First/Last-Mile Connectivity:

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of RTA, noted that the project serves several residential and development communities.

The population in areas the project serves is expected to exceed 640,000 individuals by 2030. A 13.5-kilometer cycling track with separate lanes for bicycles, e-scooters, and pedestrians will be constructed along the road.

This cycling track will enhance first and last-mile connectivity, linking with the Dubai Internet City Metro Station and various commercial and service destinations.

Unique Design Features:

The cycling track will include two bridges: one crossing Sheikh Zayed Road and the other crossing Al Khail Road. The Al Khail Road bridge will have a unique geometric design inspired by the surrounding environment.

This project aims to improve transportation infrastructure, reduce congestion, and promote sustainable and healthy modes of transportation in Dubai.
