UAE’s Revolutionary Energy Management System for Federal Roads

The UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has introduced a groundbreaking Energy Management System for Federal Roads, marking a significant departure from traditional high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps to advanced LED lighting technology.

AI-Powered Adaptive Illumination:

Unveiled at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), this pioneering system utilizes artificial intelligence to implement an adaptive street lighting framework. 

Equipped with sensors installed on lighting poles, the system optimizes illumination levels and adjusts lighting intensity on federal roads.

Commitment to Sustainability and Global Competitiveness:

Hassan Mohammed Al Mansouri, Undersecretary of Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at MoEI, emphasized the ministry’s dedication to enhancing sustainability within infrastructure projects, particularly federal roads. 

Al Mansouri highlighted the initiative’s role in bolstering the UAE’s global competitiveness in sustainable practices.

Environmental Benefits and Energy Conservation:

Emphasizing the environmental impact, Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, outlined the numerous benefits of this project. 

The transition to LED lights is projected to reduce energy consumption by 35-50%, equivalent to an annual saving of 1,289 MWh. 

It aims to extend light lifespan by 50%, slash carbon emissions by over 6,000 tonnes annually, and generate a cost-saving of Dh11 million.

Alignment with National and Global Initiatives:

Al Olama underscored that this initiative harmonizes with key national strategies such as the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, and the National Demand Side Management Program. 

The project is pivotal to achieving these ambitious energy and environmental goals.
