Lost and Found in the Desert: The Story of Ahmed Al Menhali’s Survival

Emirati man's white Nissan Patrol stranded amidst the vast sand dunes of the Saudi Arabian desert, symbolizing the initial phase of Al Menhali's ordeal.

The vast, unforgiving desert of Saudi Arabia recently became the backdrop for a dramatic tale of survival. Ahmed Al Menhali, a 39-year-old Emirati, was reported missing after he was last seen at a fuel station in the Taweelah area at around 10 pm on Saturday. He was on a journey to his farm located in the Empty Quarter or Rub Al Khali, one of the world’s largest sand deserts, when his vehicle ran out of fuel.

A Harrowing Ordeal

Al Menhali’s ordeal began in a region that is notoriously challenging due to its harsh terrain and lack of communication coverage. This area, straddling the border between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, is known for its vast expanses of sand and minimal signs of civilization. His disappearance sparked an intense search operation spanning three days, involving search and rescue teams who tirelessly scoured the desert’s challenging landscape. Al Menhali’s decision to stay with his car, rather than attempting to seek help on foot, was a crucial one that may have saved his life.

The Rescue

The rescue operation was a collaborative effort. The Saudi search and rescue organization, FAO, in conjunction with hundreds of volunteers, responded to a report from the Yabreen Police Station. These teams were equipped with necessary supplies like fuel, food, and tools to aid in their search. Ultimately, it was this collective effort that led to Al Menhali’s safe discovery and return.

Survival and Relief

During his ordeal, Al Menhali survived on limited water and food supplies he had in his car. His brother, Hasan Al Menhali, recounted the relief and joy upon receiving the news of his safe discovery. The lack of mobile phone coverage in the Empty Quarter meant that Ahmed couldn’t communicate until he was found by the rescue team. His family and friends were plunged into a state of worry until the moment he was found, highlighting the dangers and unpredictability of the desert.
