Fresno Becomes Second U.S. City to Ban Caste Discrimination

Fresno, California, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the second U.S. city to ban caste discrimination.

Fresno, California, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the second U.S. city to ban caste discrimination.

The unanimous passing of a resolution by the City Council marks a crucial step in promoting civil rights and equality.

First U.S. City to Outlaw Caste Discrimination:

In February, Seattle set a historic precedent by becoming the first U.S. city to outlaw caste discrimination.

This was followed by the state of California, where a bill was passed in September extending protections against caste discrimination.

Caste Discrimination and the Civil Rights Movement:

The initiative to combat caste discrimination is part of a nationwide civil rights movement, predominantly led by South Asian Americans with backgrounds that have experienced caste-based oppression. This movement aims to rectify long-standing injustices.

Fresno City Council Vice President Annalisa Perea expressed pride in the city’s commitment to civil rights protections.

While acknowledging that discrimination won’t disappear overnight, she emphasized that Fresno has taken bold steps to address caste discrimination through its anti-discrimination policy.

Advocates Urge Governor to Sign Senate Bill 403:

Caste equity leaders have been on a hunger strike for three weeks, urging California Governor Newsom to sign Senate Bill 403, officially including caste as a protected category in the state’s anti-discrimination policy.

This hunger strike will continue until the bill becomes law, with an expected timeline extending until October 14.

Legal Challenges and Hindu American Foundation (HAF)

In parallel, the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has filed a lawsuit against the California Civil Rights Department, alleging violations of the constitutional rights of Hindus residing in the state.

The complaint contests the assertion that caste-based discrimination is an inherent part of Hindu teachings and practices.

Fresno’s ban on caste discrimination represents a significant step forward in the fight for civil rights and equality.

As advocates continue their hunger strike and legal actions unfold, the issue of caste discrimination in the U.S. remains a subject of intense debate and action.
