Living in Dubai, where decorum often aligns with the country’s laws, recent incidents highlighted breaches in conduct, emphasizing that etiquette is universally discernible regardless of location.

Sports and Beyond An Unprecedented Breach:

The first incident involving Faruk Koca, president of Turkish football club Ankaragucu, was a breach of etiquette and a criminal act. 

His assault on referee Halil Umut Meler Meler during a match was deemed objectionable by both the Turkish Football Federation and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Political Figures and Social Conduct:

The second incident involved Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican presidential hopeful, during a live chat. His inadvertent bathroom visit during the conversation showcased a lack of awareness of societal codes, highlighting the need for sensitivity in public interactions.

Dubai has unique societal etiquette, with unattended personal items often indicating reserved seating. 

However, despite certain respected norms, breaches that challenge the city’s standards exist, such as leaving a mess in public spaces or disrupting others with loud phone use.

Cultivating Global Sensitivity:

Reflecting on these incidents prompts a collective understanding that adherence to societal codes is imperative regardless of regional etiquette. 

Actions that may seem harmless in one context can be perceived differently elsewhere, emphasizing the importance of a global etiquette consciousness.
