China is actively promoting innovation within the smart vehicle supply chain and is dedicated to setting standards for assisted and autonomous driving functions by 2025.

Leading the Global Auto Market:

As the world’s largest auto market, China has made intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) a long-term strategic focus, aiming to establish itself as a dominant global player in this emerging industry.

China is encouraging smart vehicle supply chain companies to form “innovation consortia.”

These groups will facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration, enabling firms to leverage each other’s strengths for technological breakthroughs, as the official Xinhua news agency reports.

Accelerating Standards Development:

Xin Guobin, vice minister of industry and information technology, emphasized China’s commitment to expediting the formulation and revision of crucial standards in the automotive industry.

Advancements in Autonomous Driving:

Official data reveals that, in the first half of 2023, over 42% of new passenger vehicles in China had already achieved Level 2 automation, signifying their ability to handle driving functions with the driver ready to take control when necessary.

Pioneering Level 3 Automation:

China is making significant progress in Level 3 automation, where vehicles can operate independently under specific conditions. Baidu’s Apollo Go has taken the lead in this field.

In June, Baidu’s Apollo Go secured a license to commercially operate its driverless ride-hailing service in select areas of Shenzhen, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of autonomous mobility.
