Dubai Unveils Plan to Upgrade 16 Bus Stations and Depots in Public Transport Boost

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an ambitious three-year plan to revamp 16 bus stations and six bus depots across the emirate. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of public transport services and improve the overall passenger experience.

The project, spearheaded by Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA, seeks to transform the traditional function of bus stations by introducing modern amenities and facilities. The overhaul will encompass major hubs like Al Ghubaiba, as well as stations serving remote areas such as Hatta.

Key enhancements planned for the bus stations include:

  1. Improved Building Facades: Renovation of station exteriors to create a more welcoming environment for passengers.
  2. Bicycle Racks: Installation of racks to encourage eco-friendly commuting and provide convenience for cyclists.
  3. Accessibility Upgrades: Ensuring accessibility for people of determination, with features such as ramps and designated spaces.
  4. Prayer Rooms: Addition of prayer facilities at select locations to cater to the needs of religious commuters.
  5. Connectivity with Metro and Taxi Services: Integration with Dubai Metro and taxi services to facilitate seamless intermodal travel.

In addition to these passenger-centric improvements, the project will also focus on enhancing driver service offices, bus parking spaces, workshops, and inspection and maintenance bays. The aim is to create a comprehensive infrastructure that supports the growing demand for public transportation in Dubai.

Mattar Al Tayer emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative in the RTA’s efforts to promote sustainable mobility. By modernizing bus stations and depots, the RTA aims to encourage more residents and visitors to choose public transport for their daily commuting needs.

The project covers nine stations in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai, including prominent locations such as Mall of the Emirates, Jebel Ali, Ibn Battuta, and Gold Souq. Additionally, bus depots in Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwyyah, Al Aweer, Jebel Ali, and Al Quoz will undergo renovation to improve operational efficiency and service quality.

Contracts for the project have already been awarded, signaling the imminent commencement of construction and renovation works. The RTA is committed to completing the upgrades within the stipulated timeframe, ensuring minimal disruption to public transport services during the implementation phase.

This initiative comes as part of Dubai’s broader strategy to enhance its public transport network and promote sustainable urban mobility. In recent years, the city has witnessed significant investments in initiatives such as next-generation bus shelters, Metro expansions, and the development of inter-emirate railway projects like Etihad Rail.

With these concerted efforts, Dubai aims to position itself as a global leader in public transportation, offering residents and visitors a convenient, efficient, and environmentally-friendly mode of travel.

By undertaking ambitious projects like the overhaul of bus stations and depots, Dubai reaffirms its commitment to building a smart and sustainable city for the future. Through strategic infrastructure investments and innovative transport solutions, the emirate continues to set new benchmarks in urban mobility and transportation excellence.
