UAE Warns Against Back Pocket Habits Leading to Chronic Spine Problems"

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a concerning health trend has surfaced as individuals inadvertently subject themselves to chronic spine issues and lower back difficulties by storing items like wallets or mobile phones in their back pockets, particularly while sitting for extended durations. Experts caution against this practice, stressing the importance of maintaining proper posture to mitigate potential long-term health consequences.

Dr. Mohammad Kamel, the medical director at Thumbay Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital, shared the case of a 35-year-old Egyptian woman experiencing persistent upper back and neck discomfort. Despite her initially normal posture, clinical examination revealed spine deviation and muscle imbalance caused by the weight of items stored in her abaya pocket. Dr. Kamel emphasized the significance of balanced posture and recommended repositioning to alleviate pressure and discomfort.

Another case highlighted by Dr. Kamel involved a 45-year-old sales professional experiencing persistent lower back pain exacerbated by long commutes between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The discomfort, attributed to sitting improperly with heavy pockets while driving, improved significantly with physical therapy and lifestyle modifications.

Similarly, Dr. Amr Hajlawi, a specialist orthopedist at Aster Clinic, treated a 27-year-old medical representative whose job entailed prolonged driving hours. Back pain, a common complaint, was successfully addressed through a combination of medication, physiotherapy, and posture correction.

Experts underscored the adverse effects of sitting on overstuffed back pockets, including muscular imbalances, joint dysfunction, and increased risk of spinal disorders like sciatica. Moreover, nerve compression from prolonged sitting can lead to tingling, numbness, or weakness in the legs, potentially progressing to serious conditions like sciatica.

To mitigate these risks, Dominic Wyatt, a motoring expert with the International Drivers Association, advised shifting items to front pockets or using a sling bag to distribute weight evenly. Other recommendations include maintaining lumbar support, adjusting seat height, and incorporating regular back exercises and stretches into daily routines.

As awareness grows about the impact of pocket placement on spinal health, adopting these preventive measures can significantly reduce the prevalence of back-related issues among the population.

The UAE’s healthcare sector is leading efforts to educate the public about the importance of proper posture and lifestyle habits in maintaining spinal health.
