UAE Encourages Collective Action on Climate Change through ‘PopCOPs’

As part of the UAE’s Year of Sustainability initiative, schools, companies, community groups, and government departments are urged to organize ‘PopCOPs,’ climate action events to foster collective efforts to mitigate climate change.
The initiative, organized by the Year of Sustainability team and COP28, encourages residents to engage in immersive activities and personal sustainability assessments and share their reflections and action plans with climate leaders and negotiators at COP28.
“PopCOPs: A Platform for Learning and Collaboration”
PopCOPs, designed for groups of 10 to 15 people, provide a platform for learning about sustainability, mobilizing solutions, and contributing to the collective impact needed for climate action.
Participants conduct personal assessments of sustainable behaviors, learn design principles, and share their insights through video messages. The events aim to empower residents to become “Actionists” with an action mindset in tackling climate change.
Flexible and Inclusive Activation:
The PopCOPs activations can be hosted almost anywhere, allowing organizers to choose suitable venues, from meeting rooms to outdoor spaces like parks.
The initiative provides:
- A guide.
- Emphasizing the need for a comfortable space.
- Essential materials like Post-it notes and whiteboards.
- A video screen.
PopCOPs typically last 60-90 minutes, allowing organizers to incorporate extra activities if desired.
Year of Sustainability’s Commitment to Climate Action:
From January to December 2023, the Year of Sustainability aligns with the UAE’s dedication to fostering environmental leadership and addressing climate change challenges.
COP28, scheduled from November 30 to December 12 at Expo City, Dubai, is a pivotal moment for the UAE to contribute to global climate discussions and showcase its commitment to sustainability.
