Spectacular Geminids Meteor Shower to Illuminate UAE’s Night Skies

The UAE is in for an astronomical treat as the Geminids meteor shower approaches its peak, delivering more than 100 shooting stars each hour.

Next week, the UAE is set to witness an astronomical marvel as the Geminids meteor shower reaches its pinnacle, promising over 100 shooting stars per hour.

This annual cosmic spectacle, active from November 19 to December 24, is expected to dazzle the night sky on Thursday, December 14.

Prime Viewing Opportunities:

The Geminids offer an awe-inspiring display, allowing stargazers to witness around 120 meteors per hour at its peak, a sight not requiring special equipment.

Like the desert, clear viewing spots away from city lights offer ideal vantage points. NASA advises acclimatizing eyes to the dark for enhanced visibility and suggests warm clothing for desert excursions.

Geminid meteors, known for their speed reaching 127,000kmph, showcase as fast, bright streaks in the night sky, often displaying a yellow hue.

Unlike other meteor showers, the Geminids are associated not with a comet but with an asteroid, specifically the 3200 Phaethon.

Guided Viewing Sessions in the UAE:

Various groups in the UAE arrange curated viewing sessions for enthusiasts.

The Mleiha Archaeological Centre in Sharjah and the Dubai Astronomy Group offer guided experiences during the meteor shower’s peak, providing opportunities to observe shooting stars, explore celestial objects through telescopes, and learn about the night sky.

Geminids Evolution and Significance:

Originating in the mid-1800s with modest appearances, the Geminids have evolved into a significant annual meteor shower, growing from 10 to 20 meteors per hour to becoming a prominent celestial event, captivating stargazers globally.
