Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, played a significant role in inaugurating the first session of the new Federal National Council term in Abu Dhabi, signaling the start of an important chapter in the UAE’s governance.

A Mix of Elected and Appointed Members: Emirati Parliamentary Group

The Federal National Council consists of 40 members, with half of them elected and the other half appointed by the rulers of each emirate. 

In the recent elections, 20 members of the Emirati parliamentary group were elected. This balanced approach ensures representation from across the emirates.

Reflecting UAE’s Diversity: Gender and Regional Representation

The newly formed Federal National Council is committed to reflecting the diverse population of the UAE. Notably, half of the council members are women, underscoring the country’s dedication to gender diversity in its political institutions. 

Regional representation is also carefully considered, with Abu Dhabi and Dubai each contributing eight members, while Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah have six representatives. Ajman, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain are equally represented with four members each.

A New Beginning: Sheikh Mohammed’s Statement

Sheikh Mohammed expressed his thoughts on this important occasion through social media, stating, “Today we inaugurated the convening of the new Federal National Council,” marking the commencement of the 18th term of the council. 

This new term is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the UAE, driven by the collaborative efforts of its diverse and representative membership.
