Prosecutors are pushing for an eight-year, two-month jail term and a hefty fine of nearly 24 million euros ($24 million).

Singer Denies Wrongdoing and Rejects Plea Deal:

Shakira, now residing in Miami with her two sons, Milan and Sasha, vehemently denies any wrongdoing and has rejected a plea deal with prosecutors, opting to face trial. The charges revolve around her residency status from 2012 to 2014.

Prosecutors claim that the “Queen of Latin Pop” spent over half of the mentioned period in Spain and should have paid taxes accordingly.

Allegedly, Shakira utilized companies based in tax havens to evade Spanish taxes, maintaining her official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015.

Defense Claims Nomadic Lifestyle:

Shakira’s defense contends that until 2014, she led a “nomadic life,” earning primarily from international tours. They argue that she permanently moved to Barcelona shortly before the birth of her second son in January 2015.

The high-profile trial is anticipated to feature nearly 120 witnesses and span until December 14. Spanish prosecutors conducted a detailed investigation, scrutinizing social media, payments, and even healthcare records during Shakira’s pregnancy to support their case.

Finances in the Spotlight: Pandora Papers and Previous Questions:

The trial follows Shakira’s inclusion in the 2021 “Pandora Papers” leaks, exposing the financial strategies of the global elite. The revelations pertained to her residence in the Bahamas, raising questions about her financial practices.

Despite the legal challenges, Shakira had a noteworthy night at the Latin Grammy Awards, securing three awards, including Song of the Year and Best Pop Song.

The singer’s performance swiped at her former partner, Gerard Pique, referencing a “debt to the tax office.”
