Paris Attack Near Eiffel Tower Claims One Life, Injures Two

A tragic incident occurred near the famed Eiffel Tower in central Paris, killing one and wounding two more.

A tragic incident unfolded near the iconic Eiffel Tower in central Paris, resulting in the death of one person and injuring two others. 

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin confirmed that a man attacked tourists in the vicinity, leading to the casualties.

Suspect’s Background and Arrest:

The assailant, a 26-year-old French national, was swiftly apprehended by the police using a Taser stun gun, as disclosed by Minister Darmanin. 

Notably, the suspect had a previous conviction in 2016 for planning another attack and was under the surveillance of French security services due to his presence on their watch list. Additionally, he was known to have psychiatric disorders.

The attack occurred at approximately 1900 GMT near the Quai de Grenelle, close to the Eiffel Tower. The assailant, after fatally injuring a German national in a knife assault targeting a tourist couple, proceeded to attack two more individuals with a hammer while being pursued by law enforcement before his arrest.

Suspect’s Statements and Motive:

During the arrest, the suspect reportedly uttered “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) and expressed distress regarding the loss of Muslim lives in Afghanistan and Palestine, along with anguish over the situation in Gaza, according to Minister Darmanin.

Investigation and Security Concerns:

The anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office has taken charge of investigating the incident. 

The timing of this attack, occurring less than eight months before Paris hosts the Olympic Games, raises concerns about security preparations for the global sporting event. 

The city plans an unprecedented opening ceremony on the Seine River, expecting a sizable audience of up to 600,000 spectators.
