The India-Pakistan encounter at the ICC World Cup garnered historic viewership. Still, the match will be remembered for the wrong reasons – fan hooliganism that tainted the spirit of the game.
At the iconic 132,000-seater Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, Indian fans hurled abuse at Pakistan batsmen, tarnishing the event.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has lodged a complaint with the International Cricket Council about the fans’ improper conduct.
Renowned Cricketer Condemns Fan Behavior:
Former Indian player Gautam Gambhir expressed his disappointment and condemned fans’ unruly behavior during the India-Pakistan match.
India-Pakistan cricket matches have seen numerous incidents of fan misconduct throughout the years. Here, we look at five unfortunate incidents that have brought shame to the game.
Srikkanth’s Unfortunate Encounter with a Fan (1989):
In a 1989 Test match in Karachi, Indian skipper Krishnamachari Srikkanth was targeted by an enraged fan.
The match also marked the international debut of a young Sachin Tendulkar. An angry fan invaded the pitch, leading to a brawl, and Srikkanth and Mohammad Azharuddin were attacked.
Objects Thrown in the 1987 Ahmedabad Test Match:
The 1987 Ahmedabad Test match saw an alarming incident when fans in Karachi hurled objects at the Pakistani players near the boundary line. Six Pakistan players donned helmets for protection.
The crowd stopped the onslaught only after pleas from Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. Gavaskar made history by becoming the first player to score 10,000 Test runs.
Stone-Throwing Spectators in Karachi (1997):
In a match during Pakistan’s 50th independence anniversary celebrations, fans in Karachi disrupted the second ODI match between India and Pakistan by pelting stones at Indian fielders.
The game was halted four times and subsequently reduced to 47 overs. India, led by Sourav Ganguly’s century, successfully chased a target of 266.
Incidents of fan misbehavior have marred the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry, and the cricketing community needs to address this issue to maintain the integrity of the sport.
