Veteran British actor Michael Caine, an iconic figure in Hollywood with a decades-long career, has officially retired from acting at 90. 

His announcement follows his acclaimed performance in his final film, “The Great Escaper,” released on October 6.

A Final Bow:

In “The Great Escaper,” Caine portrayed real-life World War II British veteran Bernie Jordan, who escaped from an elderly residential care home to attend the 2014 D-Day celebrations in France. 

The film received praise for his performance, which became a fitting swansong for his illustrious career.

Caine’s Reflections:

Caine shared his retirement plans on BBC Radio 4’s Today program: “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now.” 

He humorously acknowledged that the roles available at his age would likely be limited to playing 90 or 85-year-old men without being the lead character. He decided it was time to step away from the limelight.

A Prolific Career:

Over seven decades, Michael Caine appeared in more than 160 films. Known for his amiable Cockney persona and deadpan acting style, he left an indelible mark on Hollywood. 

His filmography ranges from classics like “Zulu” and “The Italian Job” to more recent roles in “Interstellar” and “The Dark Knight” franchise alongside Christian Bale.

Awards and Honors:

Caine’s exceptional career earned him six Oscar nominations and two wins, in 1986 for “Hannah and Her Sisters” and 2000 for “The Cider House Rules.” 

He also received Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and numerous other accolades. In 2000, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
