FTA’s New App Streamlines VAT Refund Process for Tourists

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has launched a new mobile app named "Tourist Refund" to make it easier for travellers to collect VAT refunds.

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has introduced a new mobile app called “Tourist Refund” to simplify claiming VAT refunds for tourists.

This innovative digital platform eliminates the need for tourists to keep physical purchase receipts for VAT refunds.

Seamless Digital Experience:

Tourists can download the Tourist Refund app via FTA’s service provider, Planet.

When tourists make purchases in the UAE, merchants can scan the invoice using the app, which records the transaction details, including the VAT amount refundable upon exiting the country.

Effortless VAT Refunds:

Upon departing the UAE, tourists can visit designated locations at the airport and present their invoices stored in the app to claim their VAT refund, which can be received in cash or transferred to a credit card.

This streamlined digital process eliminates the need to wait in queues, automating the refund process.

Record Tourist Arrivals:

Dubai has witnessed robust growth in international visitor arrivals, welcoming 8.55 million tourists in the first half of 2023, representing a 20% increase compared to the previous year.

According to the Department of Economy and Tourism, these figures surpassed pre-Covid-19 levels when Dubai welcomed 8.36 million international visitors in the first half of 2019.

Availability and Future Expansion:

The Tourist Refund app is currently available on the Android platform and is expected to be accessible on Apple devices by the end of the year.

This digital solution enhances the experience for tourists seeking VAT refunds as they exit the UAE.
