The Shopping season starts in the UAE. The much-awaited Dubai Shopping Festival is coming, starting on 17 December and will end on 30 January 2021.

It is one of the biggest festival sales in the UAE. This year, one of the biggest highlights of the DSF is the 12-hour sale from Majid Al Futtaim malls across Dubai on December 26. In this sale, users will see up to 90% discount on every product.

History of the Dubai Shopping Festival

Present Prime Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is credited for starting the DSF on 16 February 1996. It took 45 days to launch the festival for the first time. This year marks the 25th edition of the Dubai Shopping Festival, and this time it marks the longest period of time that this festival has run so far.

This festival has a direct impact on Dubai’s retail trade industry and economy. Originally conducted to increase sales, the festival, later on, started promoting it as a tourist attraction.

According to Wikipedia, in the first Dubai Shopping Festival, 1.5 million people spend over 500 million dollars. And these statics are growing every year.

Dubai is home to world records. Multiple world records are common in the Dubai Shopping Festival also. In 1999, DSF had the world’s biggest chair, longest gold chain, sofa, mattress, and stationary bicycle.

2001, people saw the world’s largest shopping bag, a biryani bowl, and an incense burner.

2002, DSF mesmerized with the largest box of chocolates, magazines, and the largest entry visa.

2004, the largest calendar longest buffet, as well as shopping cart, were displayed.

Due to the sudden death of the then ruler of Dubai Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2006, the festival was first postponed and later canceled.

In 2007, as the 2006 was cancelled, this year saw the biggest DSF till date, spanning 54 days in total.

A year of difference

Every year since then, DSF got bigger and bigger and came through once in the lifetime moments. This year people of the UAE will celebrate the 25th anniversary of DSF. But this time it will be different. With all the chaos going around the world, this DSF will not be just about the grand sales and attractions. This year, the festival symbolizes the true spirit of hope and unity that drives mankind. It showcases even in dark times- you can find happiness if you don’t lose hope.
