Newcastle United suffered the first loss of their Champions League season as Borussia Dortmund secured a crucial win on a rain-soaked evening at St James’ Park.

Impressive Start

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United made an impressive return to Europe’s top-tier competition, securing a notable draw against AC Milan in San Siro and delivering a memorable thrashing of Paris St-Germain at home.

The Magpies started their European journey with promise.

Dortmund’s Outstanding Performance

In contrast, Borussia Dortmund, considered the underdogs of Group F, defied expectations with a remarkable performance that culminated in a victory. Felix Nmecha’s composed finish in added time of the first half sealed the win for Dortmund.

Missed Opportunities for Newcastle

Despite their efforts, Newcastle United couldn’t replicate their previous intensity in the match against Dortmund.

The Magpies had their fair share of opportunities, with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel thwarting Anthony Gordon on two occasions and making a brilliant save from Callum Wilson in the second half.

Newcastle also came agonizingly close to salvaging a point in the final moments, with Wilson’s header hitting the crossbar and Gordon’s shot deflecting onto the goal frame.

Dortmund’s Threat

Dortmund kept Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope busy throughout the match, particularly with an outstanding double save from Donyell Malen and Niclas Fullkrug in the first half.

The German side displayed their attacking prowess and secured a well-deserved victory.

This result is a setback for Newcastle in their European campaign but showcases the competitive nature of the tournament.
