Cultivating Community and Sustainability at American University of Sharjah

Every Thursday evening, the garden area outside the American University of Sharjah library transforms into a vibrant hub of activity.
The Manbat Farmers’ Market comes alive on campus, offering students, faculty, and staff a delightful array of organic, fresh vegetables and fruits.
A Celebration of Local Produce:
The Manbat Farmers’ Market is a weekly celebration of locally grown produce, symbolizing sustainability and community connection.
This lively initiative engages the university community, allowing them to take home organic, farm-fresh vegetables and fruits. The market operates from 5 pm to 9 pm, becoming a colorful and flavorful addition to the campus.
A Fresher, Tastier Choice:
The market has become a colorful spectacle and a preferred shopping destination for many. “It’s so colorful and a fun adventure for us.
Many of us buy from here rather than going to supermarkets,” shared Christine, a student at the university. Beyond just buying vegetables, it’s about making healthier choices and supporting local farmers. “Our meals are fresher and tastier,” added Christine.
Supporting Sustainability and Local Farmers:
The Manbat Farmers’ Market is a joint effort between the American University of Sharjah and Arada, aligning with the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051.
It addresses the challenges of our global era by promoting healthy, locally sourced produce. This initiative emphasizes the importance of sustainable living and supports AUS’ commitment to experiential learning.
Connecting the AUS Community:
This market offers fresh produce and directly connects the AUS community with local farmers. By introducing the freshest and most nutritious products to the market, the university aims to demonstrate that 100 percent home-grown ingredients are vital for the UAE’s long-term food security and benefit the environment and health.
A Culinary Delight:
Visitors to the market can indulge in delicious meals prepared by the participants. Ameera Al Hasani, a student at the university, shared her enthusiasm, saying, “I come here for veggies and a particular ice cream made out of loose fruit and Ajwa dates.”
The market experience extends beyond just tasty salads; it’s a small act that makes a big impact.
Students Contributing to Sustainability:
The salespersons at the market have noted that students are adopting sustainable practices and focusing on staying fit and healthy.
They observe students following diet plans and regularly purchasing vegetables from the market. Organic products here are affordable and in demand, with items like potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, eggplant, melons, and bananas being popular choices.
The Manbat Farmers’ Market is more than just a place to shop; it’s a community gathering, a commitment to sustainability, and a celebration of the goodness of locally sourced, organic produce.
