China Accuses Philippines of Illegal Entry into Disputed Waters

China’s military has stated that a Philippine vessel “illegally entered” waters near Scarborough Shoal, a disputed area in the South China Sea, without authorization. 

Tensions have been rising between China and the Philippines in the contested waters, with recent incidents leading to accusations from both sides.

Calls for Immediate Halt:

The People’s Liberation Army Southern Theater Command urged the Philippines to immediately cease its regional provocations. 

These incidents have escalated in the South China Sea, where China and the Philippines, along with Taiwan, have overlapping claims to the Scarborough Shoal.

Violation of Sovereignty and International Norms:

According to Senior Colonel Tian Junli, a spokesperson for the People’s Liberation Army Southern Theater Command, the actions of the Philippine vessel have “seriously violated China’s sovereignty and international law” and conflict with the basic norms governing international relations. 

He expressed concerns about potential misunderstandings and miscalculations resulting from these actions.

China’s Claims in the South China Sea:

China asserts sovereignty over a significant portion of the South China Sea, including areas falling within the exclusive economic zones of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. 

These overlapping territorial claims have led to ongoing maritime disputes and regional tensions.
